Spring Courses Now Available

Here’s an Antidote for Those Dark January Days!

Are you finding these winter months dark and maybe even a bit depressing?  Mid Island Elder College has an antidote for that!

It’s called lifelong learning.

To that end, Mid Island Elder College brings courses and a popular speaker series to the residents of Parksville, Qualicum, Nanoose, Lantzville and Nanaimo.

President Robin Fisher notes that lifelong learning helps keep people healthy and prevents disease. It is also a powerful antidote to the epidemic of social isolation and loneliness.

That’s why Elder College has designed a prescription pad to help cure those winter blues. It asks “What matters to you?” And then prescribes an Elder College cure. For example, do you want to:

·         Feel more connected?  Become a member of Elder College

·         Rejuvenate your brain? Take a course

·         Gain purpose and friends? Volunteer

·         Stay active and involved? Teach a course

·         Learn and socialize? Attend a speaker series

Starting in January, an exciting array of courses is being offered. On this website you’ll find courses focusing on everything from arts and crafts to science and technology to history and politics.  Plus health and well-being, reading and writing, philosophy and religion. You can join a fiction book club, learn about watercolour painting, or delve into the history of First Nations land in B.C.  Maybe you’d like to learn more about meditation practice?  Or discover some useful free apps for Windows and MacOS?  All of these topics and many more are on offer by Elder College.

In addition to course offerings, Elder College also sponsors a popular Saturday Speaker Series.  This fall’s series focused on the theme of “Owning Your Health.”  The spring series theme is “Tackling Thorny Issues,” and will look at the topics of reconciliation, drug use and homelessness.  The talks are scheduled for 10 a.m. February 15, March 15 and April 26 at Nanoose Place.

The Winter/Spring 2025 courses are now available for registration! Take a look on this website.
