We are Not Alone!

Older adults are the fastest-growing demographic in Canada, according to research conducted by Statistics Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

While the total population has grown by 30% since 2000, mostly through immigration, the proportion of seniors has grown much more rapidly. For example:

The population of people in their 80s rose by  89 per cent, and the number in their 90s by 175 per cent. There are 9,500 centenarians now living in Canada, a proportion of the population greater than four times the global average.

“These remarkable findings,” said MIEC President Robin Fisher, “make it obvious that there is a solid place for Elder College in enhancing seniors’ quality of life, especially on Vancouver Island, where so many choose to retire.”
